Why Your Keurig is So Loud (And How to Fix It!)

keurig is loud

Keurig coffee makers are a quick and convenient way to make a single cup of coffee. However, some people have had a problem with their Keurig sounding too loud when brewing. Which is really annoying to deal with. So what causes some Keurigs to sound so loud, and how can you fix it?

A Keurig coffee maker will always make some noise when brewing. However, if the Keurig sounds louder than it should, it could be because of the hard material it’s sitting on, it’s clogged with mineral deposits, the machine is an older model, or the Keurig is broken.

In this article, I’ll cover all 4 of these possibilities and give you a solution of how to fix the loud noise your Keurig is making for each one. Let’s get into it!

Another problem many people have with their Keurigs is a descale light that won't turn off. If your descale light is on, check out my guide to turning it off here.

Reasons Why Your Keurig Sounds so Loud

It’s Rattling on What It’s Sitting On

If you’re Keurig sounds too loud when it’s brewing, the first thing I would check is what material it’s sitting on and how it’s sitting on it.

For example, if your Keurig sits on a hard surface like granite or a hard and uneven material like tile, some of the loud noise could be coming from when it vibrates and rattles during brewing on this hard material.

To fix this, you can put styrofoam, a rubber plate, a corkboard, or a mouse pad under the Keurig to cushion the vibrations of the brewer and prevent it from rattling against the hard surface when it's brewing.

Or, if you don’t like the look of your Keurig sitting on top of some of these things, you could stick the felt furniture pads below on the bottom of the brewer to raise it off the countertop and dampen any rattling.

Even if elevating your Keurig off a hard surface doesn’t quiet it completely back to normal, it should dampen the sound a little to make it more tolerable.

It’s Clogged with Mineral Deposits

There are chemicals, minerals, bacteria, and microorganisms in all tap water. While most of these chemicals and minerals are actually good for you, when you make coffee in your Keurig with water that has minerals in it, minerals like calcium can deposit and build up inside of the machine when the water is heated.

This is why Keurig recommends that you use filtered (Britta) or bottled water when brewing because they have much less minerals in them that could get stuck in the coffee maker.

But even if you do use bottled or filtered water with your Keurig, the company still recommends that you “descale” the brewer every 3-6 months. Descaling your brewer is basically just cleaning it to remove these calcium deposits that build up and can cause issues in the machine.

If you’ve been using your Keurig for more than 6 months, haven’t descaled it, and it’s making loud noises when brewing, it could be because of mineral deposits that have built up inside.

If you’re not sure how to descale your Keurig (I wasn’t) you can learn from this article by goodhouskeeping.com

For some people, descaling will completely fix the noise issue. However if you’ve placed your Keurig on a soft surface and descaled it and it’s still making loud noises when brewing, I’ve got two more possible explanations for you.

It’s an Older Model

Another reason your Keurig may be sounding too loud is that it’s one of the older models that doesn't have quiet brewing technology.

Apparently, in the past few years, Keurig has created something called “quiet brew technology” and has put it into their newer models of brewers.

Now I don’t know what this “quiet brew technology” is, but if you’re Keurig model is older and making a lot of noise, it could be because it doesn’t have this newer feature. If that’s the case, and you’ve tried the two solutions above already, you may need to make an upgrade to a newer Keurig to get rid of the noise.

What model do you upgrade to? I’ll talk about that in a second. But first, we need to cover the last possible explanation for why your Keurig is so loud.

It’s Broken

If you’re Keurig is super loud while brewing and you’ve tried putting it on top of a soft surface, descaling it, and it’s already a newer model, the only other explanation I have for you is that there may be a broken part in your Keurig.

Usually when a Keurig is too loud, the piece that’s broken is the pump. So if you have a newer unit or it was working fine until recently, the pump in it may be broken.

If this is the case, you can email or call Keurig about the problem and they should send you a replacement.

The warranty on all Keurigs is one year, so if you’ve had your machine longer than that the company may not be able to send you a replacement. It also technically doesn’t cover any damage done by you, so if you told them that you knocked the Keurig off the counter one time and it’s been sounding funny since, they may not be able to help you out.

If you're Keurig is old and/or broken you can find my current favorite model below It has the ability to brew both K-cups and drip coffee depending on your mood.

If your Keurig is still too loud…

If you’ve tried everything in this article and still think your Keurig is too loud, you may just have to start making coffee a different way.

At the end of the day, if Keurig doesn’t take the complaints of their customers into account and make their machines quieter, we as a consumer only have so many options.

Other easy ways to make a small quantity of coffee relatively quickly are the French press and aero press. Of course, making a cup of joe with these devices won’t be quite as mindlessly easy as with a Keurig, but at the same time, the quality of coffee you're making is 3x better (And 3x quieter).
